Clients

If you’re a prospective client, simply contact us and let us know your needs and budget, or set up an appointment to discuss your needs.

If you’d like to be involved in the production of a film, please note that you can’t buy a place on one of our films.

We can, however, produce a script that a client provides, or make a promotional video or animation about a client, as long as it is made clear that you are a client and not an employee.

We do not offer fund-raising services for clients, we have a backlog of our own material to find finance for.

Freelancers

Ptara works with talented freelancers from time to time.  We are especially interested in those who have experience with comedy, historical comedy, and educational media.

Trained graphic designers, voice actors, and sound recordists may be hired in the near future on a project by project basis.  It will be easiest if you are based in Aberystwyth, for those based outside of Aberystwyth we may consider you if you have a quality sound or graphics studio.

We only hire experienced people who have the relevant training and can communicate about their work with us.

Screenplays

Screenwriters, please read the following before sending us anything:

Please do not send unsolicited screenplays.  We don’t read unsolicited scripts of any kind.

Please note that Ptara writes most of our scripts in house.  Our co-founder started out as a screenwriter and ended up producing his own scripts because of creative differences.  We’d love to be able to produce every good script that comes our way, but even reading screenplays is a time consuming process, and we have more scripts than time.

Those creative differences, by the way, involved keeping our scripts suitable for their intended audience.  We are not interested in scripts that offend to be funny, and while we create thought provoking work for adults, we aim to only produce material that is suitable for family viewing.

When working for clients, we may work on violent films in order to pay the bills and make a living, but we never invest any of our resources on movies that we don’t want to see ourselves.

We are inspired by the comedy of Laurel and Hardy, of Goldoni, of Katherine Hepburn, or Lucille Ball.  We are not as keen on contemporary Hollywood, and we don’t really care what celebrities think of your script.

We don’t care how commercial you think your script is, we have a huge backlog of ideas waiting to be completed in house.  If we don’t produce more films, it’s because we lack the time, resources and money, but we do not lack material.  We have enough stories to last us a lifetime, and we probably already have a story similar to yours.

If you still are interested, write us a short (less than 200 word) pitch in an email, and direct it to one of our staff who is accepting queries.  If it sounds like something we’d be interested in, we may request the screenplay.  If not, please don’t be offended if we don’t reply.  Also, please note that if you use offensive language in your pitch, it may be deleted by our spam filters, so please keep pitches professional.

Please wait at least two weeks before following up, and please follow any instructions provided by the member of staff.

Note: we will not be able to read new material until fall of 2017.

Work Experience

Q: Does Ptara offer work experience?

We have had queries about work experience in the past, and have worked with some promising young professionals.  Sometimes we have been unavailable for work experience because of travel commitment or pending travel commitments related to projects.

If you need to have a work placement as part of your studies, we’d advice you to choose companies that you’d like to work for in the future.

If you feel we would be a good fit, let us know why, so we can tailor the experience to your career goals.  We do everything from accounting to letter writing to post production, and it helps to know your interests ahead of time.

Also note that we may not be available the same weeks as you are, and you should have at least three companies in mind in case the first doesn’t work out.

Check our contacts page for our current office address.  The office address is where we’ll be working from, as there’s more space here, but the mailing address is where you should send applications to, as post is more secure there.

Non Profits

As a rule, we treat educational institutions and other non-profits like any other clients.

Most of our work in the office involves sitting down, so we need to get out.  We do not volunteer as writers or editors, because we need to give our chairs a break.

If you’re interested in volunteers for your non profit, we are interested in manual labor that involves moving around – like helping to build bridges or running marathons.  However, we don’t have the time or budget for travel inside crammed vehicles, so we’d prefer to do this work locally.

If you’re looking for monetary contributions, please note our size.  We are a tiny company, without much in the bank, and you’ll probably have more luck with larger organizations.

We do work for non-profits, but we do not offer any non-profit discounts, unless you can convince our suppliers to give us a discount for the same project.  However, if you let us know your budget, we’ll see if we can find a creative way to fit the project within it.

Interviewees

If you’d like to be interviewed for a film, please note that we don’t do a lot of documentaries, and we don’t tend to pay for factual interviews. We note that a lot of professional interviewees make up controversies in order to get attention, and we’re just not interested in that.

While we do do contemporary non-fiction for clients upon request, in these cases we prefer actual eye witnesses or people involved in a story to any so-called experts.

We tend not to seek interviewees until we have a client in place.  Everyone has an interesting story to tell, but we don’t have time to film them all.

We may plan our questions ahead of time, but as a rule we think it’s more interesting when the answers are unplanned and the interview subjects are caught off guard.  So, as a rule, interview subjects will not know what to expect.

In the case of scripted interviews, it makes more sense to hire trained actors to re-enact the character.
